Projects 424 5th Avenue Conversion

This conversion and restoration of a landmark Fifth Avenue icon, blends historic preservation with modern workplace design.

Hill West played a key role in the conversion and restoration of 424 Fifth Avenue, a landmarked 1914 Italian Renaissance Revival building, repositioning it as Amazon’s premier New York City headquarters. The 693,000 square foot ten-story structure, originally praised in Architecture magazine as “the best of its class,” presented a unique opportunity to blend historic conservation with contemporary workplace innovation.

The restoration carefully preserved and reinstated the building’s historic facade, maintaining its landmark character and architectural integrity. A sleek one-story glass addition was introduced to the rooftop, along with a lush rooftop garden and landscaped terraces.

Hill West oversaw the renovation and overbuild of both the original 11‑story volume and adjacent seven‑story annex and supported an extensive infrastructure overhaul and modernization effort.

In 2024, the New York Landmarks Conservancy honored the project with a prestigious Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award, celebrating its excellence in preserving and reanimating a civic icon.
